The
Oaks Stakes is an annual Group 1 flat horse race in the United Kingdom open to
three-year-old thoroughbred fillies. It is run over a distance of 1 mile 4
furlongs and 10 yards (2,423 metres) at Epsom Downs Racecourse. It was first run
on May 14, 1779, one year before the introduction of the Derby Stakes. The race
is named after The Oaks, a house leased to the 12th Earl of Derby which was
located about 4 miles to the east of Epsom Downs. The Oaks is presently the
third of five British races to be run during the year which are designated as
"classics". These races are all restricted to three-year-olds, with two
restricted to fillies only – the 1,000 Guineas and the Oaks. The current purse
of the Epsom Oaks is a little over £360,000. You can find the odds on the 2009
