The goal-line technology gets the
green light
The goal-line technology, a system which
will indicate if the ball has passed the goal line, has been given the
go-ahead by the International Football Association Board. Number of
different systems are under development, including the one by Hawk-Eye,
which already have systems in place in rugby and tennis. Adidas is also
developing a system which tracks the score through a microchip implanted
in the ball. There are a few
criteria for implementations hammered down by the IFAB:
- The system should only apply to the
goal-line.
- The system should be 100% accurate
with an instant notification to the referee
- It should only communicate with the
game officials.
Brian Barwick, the chief executive of the
Football Association, agrees that the goal-line technology is the way to
move ahead, but the system must be 100% accurate before being
implemented.
